The following notes have been prepared with the cooperation of current students. They are intended to give you a few pointers on finding things to do other than work.

The intercampus bus system can take you to any of the campuses in the New Brunswick area. These are Busch, College Avenue, Cook, Douglass and Livingston. Throughout the year many interesting activities are held on these campuses. To find out about current activities, graduate students should scan the last page of the Rutgers Newsletter. This is published each Friday during the academic year, and is placed in the mailbox of each full-time graduate student. Another source of information for all students is the Daily Targum, the main student newspapers. It is published Monday through Friday during the academic year. For local daily coverage you may purchase The Home News and Tribune which is a newspaper that serves central New Jersey is published in New Brunswick. For other areas in New Jersey, you may have to read The Star Ledger, a Newark paper, or The New York Times.

The state offers good hiking sites at High Point State Park and in the Delaware Water Gap. New York State also has some good places (the Catskills and the Adirondacks). If you enjoy canoeing, you might want to read Exploring the Little Rivers of New Jersey by James and Margaret Cawley.

Other interesting places in New Jersey include Great Adventure, Atlantic City and the Meadowlands. If you like to watch sporting events, you don't have to leave campus to satisfy your needs. Rutgers has pretty good basketball and football teams. Some of the football games are held in the stadium located near the College of Engineering. The basketball team plays in the Louis Brown Athletic Center, previously known as the RAC, on Livingston Campus.

In addition students in the department have organized a number of activities of their own. They have had an international dinner and a beach trip. Students also enjoyed playing tennis, basketball, volleyball and softball. In recent years, graduate students have formed a basketball team that has done fairly well in intramural competition.

Finally, you should not forget New York City or Philadelphia. Manhattan is only about 35 miles from New Brunswick and it is very accessible. A short 40 minute ride on a Suburban Transit bus from downtown New Brunswick will take you into the Port Authority, located on 39th and East 8th Streets. From there you can walk or take the subway, city bus or taxi. To go to New York City, you can also take the train that will put you in a more central location. But train departures are not as frequent as buses.

Philadelphia is a bit more than an hour away by either train or car, but it is well worth the longer trip. If you go there, don't miss Convention Hall, the Mint or the Franklin Institute.
